3rd December 2016 – Staff and friends of Foyle Women’s Aid took part in a fabulous event in St. Columb’s Hall in Derry, to raise money towards the new Children & Young People’s Unit. After three months of intense training, the dancers pulled off a spectacular night of entertainment and raised some much needed funds.
July – New Justice Minister Claire Sugden visited Ashleywood House to see the accommodation and a short presentation on our current services and services of the new Family Justice Centre. Also in attendance were Jan Melia, Chief Executive Women’s Aid Federation NI and Siobhan Porter from APEX
August – Garden Fete and official opening of the Log Cabin at Ashleywood House. This was funded by the Cash For Kids NI in association with Downtown Radio who broadcast from the event. There were various stalls, and also games, face-painting and bouncy castle for the children
September 2016 – Foyle Women’s Aid held a 40th Anniversary Seminar in the Guildhall in Derry~Londonderry. This Seminar was compered by Anita Robinson from Radio Foyle and introduced by the Mayor of Derry Hilary McClintock. Speakers at the event included the Justice Minister Claire Sugden, the Rt. Hon. Baroness Angela Smith of Basildon, one of the original founders Avila Kilmurray, Kieran Downey from WHSCT, Anne Sweeney from NIHE, Chief Inspector Alan Hutton from PSNI, Monica McWilliams, Cheryl Lamont from PBNI, Judge Barney McElholm, Bert Groen from the European Family Justice Centre Alliance and closing remarks from FWA Director Marie Brown. Attendees were also treated to Paul Casey performing his song ‘Hear My Voice’ which he specially wrote for Foyle Women’s Aid.
10th November 2016 – FWA hosted a group of visitors from the Family Justice Centre in Antwerp, Belgium. They were brought to us by Pascale Franck, who is one of our partners in the Family Justice Centres Alliance Europe. We took the opportunity to show them our plans for the new Family Justice Centre. As well as getting a tour around our offices and accommodation both in Pump Street and Ashleywood House, they also had a tour round Derry City Walls and met the Mayor of Derry City & Strabane, Hilary McClintock who hosted them for tea in the Mayor’s Parlour at the Guildhall in Derry.
As part of the international 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence, the Mother’s Union held a prayer vigil in St Columb’s Cathedral in Derry. Attended by Marie and one of our staff members, they received a generous donation of toys, goods and clothes for the women and children in our accommodation
December 2016 – The new Children & Young People’s Centre, POD15 was finally completed and the keys were officially handed over to our Children & Young People’s Coordinator Rosin Hamill, by the contractors Lowry Bros, who were also the company who in 2012/2013 renovated and refurbished Ashleywood House & Mews.
January 2017 – Foyle Women’s Aid Director Marie Brown, met with the CEO of the Wave Trust George Basking to discuss our current Teenlink programme and also the plans in place for our soon to be opened Children and Young People’s Centre – POD15.
